Built in 1828 as the turbine room for the historic Appleton Mills complex, this unique space is being redesigned as a social and cultural hub for the arts scene.

The downstairs bar and café are built around the massive turn-of-the-century turbine. The room’s Victorian industrial aesthetic is designed to honor the engineering and imagination that defined Lowell’s heyday. Patrons can enjoy a small, sophisticated menu of light fare, wines, and classic cocktails.

Upstairs, the black box theater will showcase art, comedy, dance, film, music, and performances. Our goal is to create a place for audiences to experience some of the best and brightest emerging talent – whether it is readings from a new play or film script; independent and foreign films, as well as works by regional filmmakers; and works in various media that will entertain, educate, and provoke audiences.

The Turbine House is located in the heart of the Hamilton Canal District in downtown Lowell.
